WHAT IT IS

A1C measures your average blood sugar over the past 2–3 months as a percentage.

WHAT IT MEANS FOR YOU

Most adults aim for under 7. Prediabetes is 5.7 to 6.4. Diabetes is 6.5 or higher. The right target depends on age, other conditions, and how long you've had diabetes.

WHY THIS MATTERS FOR ASIAN AMERICANS

Asian American adults often develop complications at lower A1C levels than other groups. Some clinicians recommend more conservative targets and earlier screening, particularly for South Asian, East Asian, and Filipino adults.

WHAT YOU CAN DO

  • Get tested at least once a year
  • Track changes over time, not just one number
  • Manage with diet, movement, sleep, and medications when prescribed

WHAT TO ASK YOUR DOCTOR

  • What's a realistic A1C target for me?
  • How often should we re-check?
  • Should I use a continuous glucose monitor (CGM)?
